The rain that damage the mountainous region in northern Rio de Janeiro has killed at least 626 people, when fear of the storm and the plague shadowed the rescue operation, the Brazil Civil Defence said, on Sunday.
Almost five days after the rains triggered the floods and massive landslides in one of the worst natural disaster in Brazil, the death toll continues to increase when the rescuers dig up the bodies buried by the mud of the river and reach cloistered places.
Widespread damage has led to challenges for Dilma Rousseff, the new president of Brazil, and reveals major deficiencies in emergency planning and disaster prevention in a country that aspires to gain the status of developed countries in the next few years.
